The combination of warm weather, a high pollen count and stormy conditions produced what experts call "thunderstorm asthma", an extremely rare and dangerous phenomenon that saw Victoria run out of ambulances for an entire hour.
Two people died - one after waiting 30 minutes for an ambulance.

For those of you who read my book Misconception, you'll know it ended mid-story. Today I have finished that story.... after a lot of thinking, over a long period of time, I have signed the papers to give up my donor sperm. We pay for it to be stored and every time I get the bill, I feel a little bit sad. We tried a few times with the sperm, but I was exhausted and couldn't do it anymore. Dom and I have accepted that bearing a baby will not happen for me, and I am at peace with that. My donor will have a say as to what happens with his sperm now. For those of you on the journey, I wish you the very best of luck. Everyone's path is different so please don't compare yourself to me. Oh, and don't worry about me. I'm not feeling sorry for myself at all. I'm actually quite happy about the decision. As Beyonce says, "when life throws you lemons, make lemonade!"

Not sure those leftovers are still safe? Try the 2:2:2 rule from Love Food, Hate Waste. 2hrs to get them in the fridge, then 2 days to eat them, or freeze for up to 2 months. Click here for more tips: http://bit.ly/WAWWETips
WE ARE BEGGING YOU PLEASE....stop throwing them away!! If you visit HUHA this month we will greet you with a chipper smile, and a Merry Xmas. But on the inside we are dying a little, because our reality for the holidays is not very merry at all.
Every day of every year we receive calls for help. But this month is different. Folk don't want help, they just want to dump and run. And we would like to send those pet owners this Xmas message...
To you people we not so fondly call the "Dumpers" ...Firstly of course we will help. We will always help...to be honest we are scared not too, because we know how real the consequences of not giving you what you want can be. We feel the pressure of emotional blackmail everyday.
Officially we are professional and will try not to judge. But when we take our HUHA tee shirts off and disarm ourselves. When we snuggle up to our fur families and hold them tight. That's when the judgement escapes and the tears of devastation and frustration fall.
We understand that you have well prepared excuses for failing your pet, actually a lot of you give excuses of how your pet has failed you! But mostly you are going on holiday, you are moving overseas, you have an exciting new job, you are having a real baby or you are just too busy - your pet is escaping or barking and you don't think it is your fault at all and no you wont spend money on fencing and/or day care why should you?.
To be honest your pet is probably better without your negative attitude. They will most certainly thrive in a new well adjusted caring environment.
But our question to you is why now? In December?! We understand that you have probably been too busy up until now to deal with your four legged problem. That you are getting ready to enjoy your holiday break and that it would be convenient and maybe even liberating to cut the "dead wood" so you can sit back and enjoy your summer or take that trip.
But take a moment to consider our reality..this is not our job, we don't get paid. But this is our life choice so we will take on your responsibility and honor our commitment. Of course we will help, we will work tirelessly to find a solution, we care for all animals deeply especially the ones with idiot owners that need us the most.
So please don't kill your pet or threaten and blame your actions on us for not being quick enough to grant you your xmas break a the click of your fingers. We are working so hard behind the scenes to keep up with your demands. Please don't fool yourself that this is easy for us, or that your pet will easily get another home. Because the reality is that there is not enough room in shelters across NZ, and there are just not enough good homes out there right now. And to top it off you were lazy and you didn't socialise your pet properly. And now you are asking us to fix what you have broken while we are broken, stressed and overwhelmed...because of selfish people like you.
When we go home to our families late at night...yes very late every night because of you...even over xmas our families know what you have done. Your actions have effected their lives directly too. When we leave your family pet snuggled up as best we can at the shelter each night. We look into their confused eyes. We can see that they have lost everything....but they are not losers we will make sure of that. We will find away to love and cherish every single one of them whilst in our care. And we promise each a safe and bright future, if not for xmas, as soon as we can muster a stable committed home thats right for their needs, it will be their's.
No, your dumped pets are not the losers......but you are.
And if you can be bothered to read this please Please take note. WE ARE BEGGING YOU don't get another pet until you learn to take some responsibility for your commitments!!
All we want for Christmas is for the cycle of ignorance to stop!! ______________________________________________________________ To donate $3 please txt "huha" to 4463 Thank you HUHA community - together we can save lives xx
HOW ABSOLUTELY GUTTING! Minister Upston called us to her office to talk...then wouldn't hear us speak!
Well that's not entirely true. She welcomed our views around desexing, education and the licensing of classified dog owners. All the no- brainer stuff, except even around those seemingly obvious points ...well, she was missing the point ...and the opportunity to get this right. Our view is that her aim is to narrow and will have very little effect.
And then the hot potato, Minister Upstons newly announced baby, the Breed Specific Legislation was brought up. We prepared ourselves for a good robust and healthy debate. Surely she would see our point that all dogs bite, and that any unhappy, poorly cared for and poorly trained dog, what ever the breed (for instance a Sharpei x English bull terrier or a cattle dog x staffy) can do a lot of damage, and that responsible ownership is the absolute key?
But Minister Upstons body language and tone changed "Specifically I am making NO CHANGES to the current BSL that I have already announced ..." she repeated her position several times and no discussion was allowed to be entered into. We were stone walled.
We sat along side the equally as passionate to get this right Royal NZ SPCA, and the NZ Veterinary Association, but their words and efforts (and even their "but the science doesn't back you?") hit the cold hard brick wall.
We are not saying that dangerous dogs are o.k, in fact we have met some terrifying ones that we agree are not safe in our community and yes those dangerous dogs should be removed from communities, rehabbed or euthanised . But our view is that a blanket killing of specific breeds won't work. The ignorant, irresponsible and just plain bad owners will just get another dog, even another breed, treat it the same way and you'll get another dangerous dog...the cycle continues. BSL is a waste of time.
We need to target all dog owners, and desex all breeds, with only approved and registered breeders. NZ is in crisis on this issue, we are drowning in scared, confused and suffering dogs, in unwanted litters and uneducated owners...and we need a smart solution that will work, not a knee jerk reaction that has been proven not to work all over the world.
Minister Upston maybe it's time to stop, and to start listening. We only want to help you...and we can!
How do you all feel HUHA Community?

PIC: On the way home from parliament we banged into this sweet little pitty x Called Kora having a wee shampoo and then doing some shopping at Animates. Despite her having wonderful and responsible owners, under Minister Upstons new BSL if anything ever happens to her owners and they can no longer keep her, and if she is classified as Pitbull based on her looks; Kora could not legally be rehomed she must be killed.
