Tomorrow morning, Friday New York time, the second straw poll on the selection of the next United Nations Secretary-General will be taken at the Security Council. Thanks to all who have sent encouragement and support via comments and messages on this page. (In the first photo below, I was in West Africa at the time of the Ebola crisis. At that time people greeted each other by touching elbows, because of concerns that handshakes could pass on the disease.) A lot of articles and features on the SG contest are appearing. Here's one, and I will post others in the comment boxes below: http://www.thewhig.com/2016/08/04/clark-pledges-to-revamp-un
POSTSCRIPT: The result today in the UN Security Council vote was not the one the NZ team have been working for. Many thanks to all who continue to communicate strong support through this page.
My little boy heard me despairing about Trump's inhumane policy against refugees this morning. "What's a refugee?" he asked me. "It's someone who is running away from terrorism and they need another home because their home is broken" I told him. "So they come here" he said. "Well, New Zealand is far away and we don't take many refugees, there's only a few places". "Why?" He asked. And I couldn't figure out what to tell him. The refugee quota in New Zealand is arbitrary and makes no sense. It's not based on anything. He said to me "but there is room". And I said - "well yes, but the prime minister makes those decisions". "Well, call the pry inster" - Eddie said. "It's not that simple honey". I tried to explain. "But there's room" he kept saying. "They can come here because there's only one at a time and every house can just have one if is not a big house" I was confused and said - well, there's families. Suddenly he looked at me horrified - "but how do you have no home when you are a little?" He rushed to his room and cleared space in his bed - "a refugee little boy and little girl can sleep here" and then he pushed some toys off the ground - "a mama for them can sleep here". He rushed into the baby's room - "here can be a dad and a baby". "See?" He said. He raced to the door and opened it. "See, just open the door".
Last year, speed cameras generated $30 million worth of tickets. Three fixed cameras alone generated $5 million in just 10 months. Mobile cameras generated more than $20 million in that time. But the government, not Police, took all the money. So they can’t hide behind the excuse of it being a Police operational matter. The Police Minister and Prime Minister should give an assurance that 35 new fixed speed cameras will only go into the 35 deadliest crash locations. Anything else means one thing – revenue. Official information suggests camera locations are not focused on ‘where accidents occur’ but where the revenue is generated. New Zealanders need to know if these cameras are about safety or revenue.

We need to be there to support our kids not tear them down #ourfuture #letkidsbekids #igotuEljae.
Number 8, Eljae. My boy. The one you so freely stood on the sideline this morning laughing at. The one you were talking about being a 'Big boy' and not 'an asset to the team.' The one you laughed at for not being able to run as fast as your kid. Obviously not realising I, his mother, was standing right next to you listening to everything you were saying - Until I told you. Ha! You couldn't move to the other side of the field fast enough. Can I just remind you, Eljae is out there training with his TEAM twice a week, he turns up every weekend to play alongside his TEAM, the same team your kid plays for! Eljae is out there on that field supporting your son in the game just as I'm out on that sideline supporting them - your son included! I'm all for having your own opinions and freedom of speech but when you use this right to talk sh*t about my son please don't expect me to stand there and take it. Be glad he didn't hear it himself. For a kid whose never played rugby prior to 4 weeks ago, he's doing a damn good job and I tell him this every week. He does not need to hear your negativity. He, nor any of the other boys/girls, need to hear you talking down about them, so please - for the love of Beyonce - stand there on that sideline along with the rest of us parents and support OUR boys and girls! ALL OF THEM. Win or lose. It's a game. They're all out there playing the best they can. Number 8 included.
