From "The Modern Family Survival Guide" by me. Just because it's Thursday and this feels like a Thursday kind of thing to post:
People sometimes ask me what the secret is to having a successful, happy family. A family where everyone gets on, where everyone is supportive, and where there’s no conflict or problems. These are usually people who have just begun thinking about embarking on the adventure of parenthood. They’re nice people, and they want to get it right from the very beginning.
I guess I’m as a good a person to ask as any. I’ve spent over twenty years working with families, all kinds of families from many different cultures and countries with all kinds of problems and challenges. I’ve seen the best and the worst. I’ve greatly enjoyed this work. It’s been one of the great privileges of my life.
So when someone asks me what you can do to ensure from the very beginning that you build a family free from conflict and problems, my answer is always the same: ‘Get a cat.’ ‘Do cat’s help children?’ is the usual response. ‘No, I mean you should get a cat. Just a cat.’
They usually look a little deflated at this point.
I am, however, deadly serious. Over the course of my life I’ve raised two cats, and two boys, and trust me… the cats have been far easier. Monty was our first cat. No problems there. Jerry is our current cat, and aside from the fact that he’s slightly paranoid and thinks everyone is trying to kill him, and has a habit of catching wild skinks and releasing them in our house, he’s fine. We feed him, he sleeps, disappears for hours, comes inside, licks his bottom, and then sleeps again. No problem.
My boys on the other hand, require quite a bit more time and effort. They’re currently 10 and 13, so life is full. I love them more than anything, and they give my life shape, and purpose, and meaning… but there are times, especially on the difficult days, when I do think about how much easier life would have been if we’d just stopped with the cat. I’m always glad that we didn’t, but I think it would be less than honest to say that I have not, from time to time, contemplated a cleaner, quieter, cat-based life.
Families are funny old things. They are the centre of our worlds whether we want them to be or not, and they consume us in so many ways. They are messy, and difficult, and fraught with more issues than you ever could have imagined when you were first trying to imagine what being a parent would be like.
And what is true of families seems doubly true for the modern family.

The government’s immigration policy is sinister. There’s not a care in the world for young Kiwis getting jobs and setting themselves up for life. As we have said previously, many new nurses are without work, yet 7000 nurses from overseas have been given work visas under National in the last seven years. Immigration is not slowing down. Today the latest figures show a new record has been set – migration arrivals at 126,700 for the year. Arrivals over departures is a record 70,400 – over 1300 new people a week looking for a place to live and many need a job. National is taking the cheaper option. It wants migrants as a more compliant workforce, stifling fair wages and driving down New Zealand workplace conditions New Zealanders are being side-lined with a government hell-bent on adding to the population to boost consumptive growth, as opposed to working on increasing productivity for long-term economic gains.
