"My choice was not influenced by my dislike for John Key. He has got nothing to do with whether or not we should continue to have the Union Jack on our flag.
My choice was not influenced by my or anyone else’s snobby dislike of the Lockwood design. Flags don’t have to be fancy. It’s not their job to be clever. The vast majority of national flags are simple/boring. They are more about national identity, and our country’s national identity isn’t all that pretty anyway.
My choice was not influenced by the spectre of soldiers dying for the current flag. That’s just emotional blackmail. They died fighting fascism and imperialism, not for a piece of cloth, and in a lot of cases their lives were wasted.
My choice was not influenced by the cost of the referendum. A tiny sum in the grand scheme of things and a ONE-OFF cost – something lost on all the people who have spent the money a million times over with all the things they say it should have permanently funded. The money is spent now. Get over it.
My choice was not influenced by complaints about the process. It is what it is. This is where we are and it’s time to choose which flag you would rather have to represent you.
My choice was based on spending time overseas and observing people’s disbelief that we have another country’s flag on our flag.
It was based on the fact that nothing on our current flag represents me as a New Zealander.
It was based on the fact that our current flag unfairly singles out British heritage without adequately acknowledging Maori, who were here first and are equal treaty partners.
It was based on the murder and oppression that the Union Jack represents over the course of its history.
I’m very happy with my choice and most importantly I know I will feel comfortable explaining it to future generations."

A town in Italy has started using silent fireworks as a way of preventing harm to animals...
"Any large celebration that involves fireworks is fun, but while we enjoy the sounds and sights of colourful explosions overhead, our animals feel very differently.
The explosions caused by fireworks have been known to give some domestic pets heart problems, nausea, tremors, debilitating fears and light-headedness. We all know that animals have far more sensitive hearing so you won't be surprised to read that firework displays can leave pets with “acoustic stress”."
What a heart-breaking but beautiful story. Jeni Stepien's father was murdered 10 years ago, so he couldn't walk her down the aisle. But the bride-to-be came up with a way to have a piece of him there anyway -- enlisting the man who received her father's donated heart.
We’ve mentioned before about the gut health benefits of gelatine. Gelatine contains important amino acids including glycine that helps to seal leaky gut, feeds the good bacteria in your intestinal tract and can improve sleep, reduce inflammation, reduce sugar cravings and can help with joint pain.
