Bit of an emotional post today. I'm sitting at home in a patch of sunshine, replying to today's Facebook posts. Tomorrow, Scrumptious will finally be released and this page will be awash with hundreds of photos of books arriving with their new families and exciting new recipes being busted out in record time. And all your kind and beautiful comments are going to reduce me to tears - because they always do. You guys are terrific, and I'm so lucky to have an incredible community of superb people behind me. We all know the internet can be an ugly place - but with my group of people, here on my page, the vibe is ALWAYS kind, positive, and inspiring. Together, we're bucking the trend and rewriting the rules of the internet. Yeah man! So I won't be able to sleep much tonight - the countdown is on and I can't WAIT to hear what you think of the new book. Sending you love and hugs, and happy cooking. From me. xx
Today we lost another member of the rural community to depression. This hit me really hard. Because inspite of the love he had from those around him, it still happened. This is the nature of this illness and I wanted to talk a bit about it.
I have battled depression for my entire adult life. It is a monster I am all too familiar with. I have sought help, been open with family and close friends, and have fought it tooth and nail and will continue to until my last breath.
One thing I have found over the years is that, people fortunate to be without clinical depression can't fully grasp what it actually does to people with it. If you want some idea, imagine something for a moment...
Everything becomes pointless. Hopeless. The way you think. The things you want to do or should do. The emotions you hold towards people. The emotions you hold towards anything. Even basic body functions like moving, sleeping, eating, sometimes breathing. It all shuts down. Becomes void. Its not there anymore. Worst of all, it's involuntary. There is no specific external cause for it. Likewise there's no external cure. It just happens. Something inside just forces this hopelessness on to you, even if you are having the best time of your life. Its unbiased towards time, moods, events. It can just happen.
Its like, you become this animated shell. You are existing as a person thats not you, forced to look through someone elses eyes, and wishing there was a way out.
Even with all the love and support in the world, people with depression, still get depressed.
Fighting depression, is like a gladiator arena. Theres you: A lone gladiator, stark naked in the middle of the pit, then theres Depression: the roaring crowds, the starved lions, the gladiators armed to the teeth you have to fight, the arena itself.
To fight in this arena, a person suffering depression needs two things. The first is knowledge, strength, and will. This all comes from the individual. Understand what you are fighting. Know when it strikes. Know that it isnt forever. Have the strength to resist and fight back whatever the cost.
The second thing is support. Concerned patrons in the crowd cheering you on, inspiring strength. Tools you discover to be useful in fighting depression, think of these as the lone gladiators weapons and armour. It could be things like, medication, exercise, meditation, music, art, whatever works for the individual.
Without knowledge, strength, and support, it is easy to become massively outmatched and become overwhelmed. Even with support from the crowd and a strong armory, sometimes the enemy is even stronger than you expect. Fighting depression is dangerous, unpredictable, and never ending.
Alot of people with depression, dont even realise they have it. Because of this, they arent aware they need to seek support or anything. They will continue to fight losing battles in that dirty arena. If you think this may be you, or someone you know. Talk to your GP as soon as possible. Seek support. Understand the condition. Win battles.
If you have someone close to you with depression, be aware. Support them. Dont judge. Understand what its like for them when it strikes. They arent moody, they arent lazy, they arent sad. They are suffering and need your patience and understanding, because they have very little to no control over it.
Give them all the advantage you can. Even if its only a little.
If you dont know what to do or say? Thats fine. Just being there and doing not alot can make a difference.
Lastly, if you were close to someone with depression, and they took their own life, dont blame. Remember, love, honour them, and instead of blaming, hold those close to you a little closer.
