Fred Dagg an elderly Kiwi farmer, received a letter from the Department of Work and Income stating that they suspected he was not paying his employees the statutory minimum wage and they would send an inspector to interview them.
On the appointed day, the inspector turned up.
"Tell me about your staff," he asked Fred,
"Well," said Fred, "there's the farm hand, I pay him $500 a week, and he has a free house.
Then there's the housekeeper. She gets $350 a week, along with free board and lodging.
There's also the half-wit. He works a 16 hour day, does 90% of the work, earns about $50 a week along with a bottle of whisky and, as a special treat, occasionally gets to sleep with my wife."
"That's disgraceful" said the inspector, "I need to interview the half-wit."

It has been clear for some time that jobs in service stations, hotels and supermarkets are being filled and taken away from Kiwi workers, particularly by foreign students.
Even government ministries are warning about the number of immigrants with low job skills, but National is not listening.
Last year 105,000 foreign students came to New Zealand, and over 66,000 had a work visa.
You can be sure they will get the jobs. They accept any conditions. Meanwhile, 70,000 young Kiwis can’t get jobs.
It’s unfair to force Kiwis to fight for jobs against foreign workers.
And foreign students are supposed to be paying their way with foreign currency, not with dollars earned here.
Immigration is still climbing. Even the OECD, representing 24 developed countries, has warned New Zealand about the ‘unmanaged’ flow of workers, saying it is potentially bad for Kiwis chances of getting jobs.
Immigration is out of control. Time to fix it so it’s fair for Kiwis.

John Key is wrong saying no-one owns New Zealand’s water. We own it, as a nation. Companies, many foreign, are bottling and exporting our water for free– at huge profit. We get nothing. We say they should pay royalties for taking it. And, at least 25% of that money should stay in the region where the water is taken. Key created a mess over water ownership when he put the state-owned electricity companies up for sale. To sell to private companies he had to say no one owned the water, moving away from the nation’s ownership. He gave Maori an excuse to make demands and passed the responsibility and a headache to councils, which now have to consult with local iwi. It’s an absolute mess.
Bribes, backhanders, call them what you like – it’s corruption and it’s on the rise in NZ At the same time, the queues at hospitals are growing. The problem: record immigration. Auckland DHB says so. So does the Serious Fraud Office. Too many people are settling here who have a different idea of what is right and wrong. Simply put, unmanaged, unfocused, aimless immigration is doing more harm than good.
Focused immigration to give us the skills we needed has worked for NZ in the past. But now immigration is breaking records with 1280 people a week settling in or coming in as students with the hope of gaining permanent residency. It’s all too much for our country. Our way of life is being altered. Rising corruption is an attack on the very soul of New Zealand society. We once carried our corruption-free status with pride.
Just as the government is forcing all DHBs to reduce costs, at Auckland Hospital they have to use their staff to educate immigrants to go to GPs.
Kiwis are paying the price of weak politicians tip toeing around tough decisions.
