Sweet. We spent $26 million dollars to decide to keep our old flag. Pretty sure the 305,000 NZ kids living in poverty will appreciate that.
UPDATE: There are some people who are being petty and saying things like 26m divided by 300,000 kids isn't going to end poverty. Obviously! It's not about that, it's about the spending of a lot of money on something which distracts us from more important issues. Are new flags cool? Yes. Should we have one? Probably. Should we spend $26 million deciding to decide? I don't feel comfortable with that.
Saying "that's the price for living in a democracy" is not a fantastic argument. I don't see referendums on more important issues like the TPPA, taxation, asset sales, or whether we should be cloning Richie McCaw (I vote "yes"). People are talking about being able to vote on a flag design as if it's some sort of huge modern day social victory. We all lost! We lost our money and our minds over a flag colouring competition. We may as well have been voting on whether or not to bring out a Top Town DVD box set. Who cares?? It's not important right now!
Two years ago, Christchurch's Rape Crisis call centre was closed down because there was no more money in the $10 million we allocate to sexual violence services. They needed $30,000 to stay open. Luckily, after a lot of panic, the service was taken on by Aviva and still survives. But there are many other organisations and community initiatives who are struggling and will close down or disappear because there isn't enough money to allocate to schools, education, or social groups. So yes, $26 million is a "drop in the bucket" in the larger scheme of things, but saying it's insignificant is a bit of a f**k you to people who have nothing. Having come from an underprivileged community I still believe that money could have made a difference in other ways.
I do hope that one day we can have a new flag - personally, I am happy to keep the old one over the new designs which just looked like logos. And for those who think I'm pointing the finger at National, I'm not. I'd say the same thing if it were Labour or the Flagz R Cool Party. Now that's purely my opinion, it doesn't mean we can't all get along and be friends.
And now I realise I've written a really long thing to explain how much I don't care about flag debates, which makes it look as if I really care about flag debates.
The flag referendum is a waste of your money and is disrespectful to those who have served our country. With reduced postal services across the country, a lot of people won't have an opportunity to have their voice heard on the flag change so we're giving them a chance to tell the PM themselves. Go to www.keepourflag.co.nz to send them a message!
A quick update on what happened last night. We are very upset that people were hurt. We've checked in with the hospital and wish all those injured a speedy recovery. Again thanks to the police and security for helping us through the show to keep people safe.

A very strong message & video I just had to share. Well done @davidbeckham with @repostapp ・・・ Violence can mark children forever. I've met children with @unicef who have been affected by terrible violence and abuse and seen the long-lasting scars it can leave. I chose the marks on my body but millions of children bear marks they have not chosen. Please share this film to help #ENDviolence #foreverychild. It's wrong. End it.
