The Forbes annual ranking of the world's most powerful women came out yesterday - pleased to report that I'm on it as number 22. I've featured on it for many years as first New Zealand Prime Minister, and then as UNDP Administrator. Both positions have given me a platform from which to advocate and work for people and our planet - I'm passionate about human and sustainable development, and now seek to apply my energies to being the next United Nations Secretary General. Follow me on Twitter and Instagram @Helen4SG #Helen4SG, and on Helen4SG on Snapchat. This personal Facebook will also continue to have campaign-related posts, and my @helenclarkundp Twitter and Instagram sites will update on my UNDP work and related issues. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/politics/news/article.cfm?c_id=280&objectid=11651890
A massive shout out goes to Tim Dodge of Dodge Contracting, Hawkes Bay. When he got wind that there was a bit of a mess down here, he phoned the mainland to offer a hand and was told by some cheesedick official he wouldn't be required. So like many recovery volunteers, said ''f@ck it'', and came down anyway. Tim loaded 2 diggers onto his Truck and caught the first Ferry south and has been absolutely pumping the last 10 days clearing tracks, repairing culverts and being an all around good c@nt. Even more impressive is the bugger won't take a cent for it! Tim wraps up down here this week then heads home again in the next few days. If you see him on the road give him a wave and a toot.

We’ve said for years the TPPA is no good in its present form. Now the US has a president elect who doesn’t want the TPPA. But, for some bizarre reason the National government insists on bulldozing the New Zealand-related legislation through Parliament. We put a motion to end it, to stop the waste of time and waste of taxpayers’ money. National, ACT and United Future refused. So, it will continue its pointless journey through Parliament. It’s cost $5 million so far for the TPPA. Then add Parliamentary time. Every hour costs over $20,000 - almost $160,000 so far and it’s not passed yet. It’s beyond belief. TPPA is going nowhere, achieved absolutely nothing. We’re for trade, and agreements that work for New Zealand. This one was more about corporate greed than trade.

We say no to spending tens of millions of dollars on building a new office tower for MPs. The government is doing little to house the homeless. It refuses to stop open door immigration which is pushing up house prices and shutting Kiwis out of buying a home. Nevertheless Parliament’s Speaker David Carter and the National government want to indulge themselves and spend a fortune of taxpayers’ money for fancy new offices. The fact is we don’t need 120 MPs. Reduce the number to 100 and there’d be plenty of room, and no need to build new offices. Former Prime Minister Keith Holyoake used to have five people in his office – John Key has 55. Before anyone starts screaming about the need for more space, let’s take a look at how bloated the system now is.
