My Dad is cool, he’s a solo Dad of 5. My brother he’s 18, I'm 16, my sister 13 and my little brothers are 4 and 2. We were living in Hamilton, Dad was working, he’s a painter. We came up here in March because my close cousin, drowned at Hunua falls.
We were just trying to get over my cousin’s funeral and then I got told that I have Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and that there’s a tumour in my lower back. Everything, it all went down hill from there. When I got told, I didn’t think about anything, I just started crying. It was hard to take in. The doctors said I needed chemo therapy straight away so it wouldn’t spread and that the best place for that was Starship hospital in Auckland. At first Dad said it was to far for us but then he moved my family up from Hamilton to my Aunty’s here in Mangere (the mother of the cousin who'd died).
The first treatment it made me really cold, really weak and really sick. I hated being in hospital. The hardest part was losing my long hair, I always used to play with it and plait it. When my hair starting coming out, my tears started falling down. Two days it was all gone.
I was in hospital for a month. I wasn’t able to swallow, I got infections, I had 2 massive seizures. I had to have antibiotics and that lead to kidney problems so not only do I have cancer, I have kidney problems. When I was finally allowed to go home I was really happy. I told my Dad I was hungry, I wanted to go to McDonald's. We celebrated getting out, I ordered my favorite Big Mac combo and then we went home to Aunty's.
There were 15 people living at Aunty’s. I slept on a mattress in a room I shared with my little brothers. It wasn’t really good because the hospital said I had to wear a mask because I could easily get infected. It was nice to be around family, I didn’t want to talk about having cancer, we’d talk about my cousin, I miss him. Dad had stopped working to look after all of us. He would go to WINZ for appointments, he told them about me having cancer, about us. They did nothing. He went to Housing NZ, told them, they couldn’t find us a house “too full” they said “too full”. We were stuck at Aunty’s things got really tense, so we had leave. My Dad heard about what the marae was doing and said “let’s try the marae.”
We were nervous cause we’re Samoan. At first we thought, 'oh no there’s not gonna be islanders or anything,’ but once we got here everyone was kind and loving. It’s pretty cool here. We are happy, they are helping us to get a house which is a huge relief for my Dad. He still has to take me to Starship for my check ups, blood tests, to flush my line and to change the dressing. He's still stressed out, but I'm really proud of my Dad.
I hope we get a house. So we can all live again. So my Dad can go back to work, he's a hard worker. My brother wants to get a job. My sister she likes her school and I want my little brother’s to have a home. I feel responsible for all of this.
I asked B what she’d like most of all in life and she said right now, a holiday to Samoa to see her Mum’s family, and she wants to meet the wrestler Roman Reigns.
She wants to be cured of cancer, of course.
And a house. She’d like to get a house.
B is for Brave 💖💕
----------------------------- Although the past few months have been extremely difficult, the light at the end of the tunnel is becoming brighter. B and her aiga will be moved into a home this week (Tuesday) and will get to focus on her healing without the pressures of having no home.

After a long illness, Paul Henry's lovely Mum Olive Mary Christine Hopes has passed away this afternoon.
Paul and Olive had a truly remarkable bond. He inherited her cheeky and mischievous nature - and they completely and utterly adored each other. The audience of all of Paul's shows knew her as a real character and the interactions between mother and son were just so enjoyable - Paul loved teasing Olive... and Olive loved him doing it.
Paul would often speak about her being in the "home for the bewildered" and make fun of her playing bocce. Olive would take everything in good humour - giggling with her contagious laugh and pretending to tell him off with cries of "Oh Paul", her voice bursting with pride.
New Zealanders really fell in love with Olive when she decided to leap off the Sky Tower to mark her 79th birthday. Of course, her son documented it on television. As Paul said, she took 79 years to show her daredevil side - and the audience was just in awe of her adventurous spirit.
Olive wasn't just Paul's mum - she was also his best friend and loved him unconditionally. Olive will be dearly missed by Paul and his three daughters, Lucy, Sophie and Bella, who were exceptionally close to their Nan.
