EDIT at 6:00am - Houghton Valley School and Loaves & Fishes Hall have opened if people need a place if feel you need to be around others. - As the Tsunami warming is only for the beaches and marine areas you can return to your homes. - Wellington City Council will be conducting rapid building assessments in the CBD. Building owners are responsible for getting their buildings checked by qualified engineers.
EDIT at 5:18am - those without power should hopefully expect it back on by mid-late morning. However, some places might take a little longer.
It is strongly advised not to come into the Wellington CBD today. It appears there are damages around the city, especially in high rise buildings. Some buildings have suffered internal damages and need to be checked by building inspectors. If you have concerns speak to your building manager. Check with your employer for any specific guidance related to your work place.
What we know at this stage: 1) The Red Zone (Marine and Beach) tsunami threat along the coast is still in place for the whole Wellington Region. See our website or previous posts for tsunami map link. 2) Airport - The airport is operating after the runway has been inspected. https://www.wellingtonairport.co.nz/ 3) Rail and bus - Wellington rail services are suspended until further notice. Wellington Railway Station is closed to the public until further notice. Rail services are likely to be disrupted in the morning while tracks are checked. Please check the updates section of the Metlink website for more information https://www.metlink.org.nz/service-updates/#ServiceUpdates-Bus and https://www.metlink.org.nz/service-updates/#ServiceUpdates-Train 4) Ferry – The Interislander is not running at this stage. We are currently checking on Blue Bridge and the East by West. 5) Drinking water – there have been reports of broken water mains. At this stage there are no boil water notices. However, if you suspect you have been affected, contact Wellington Water. 6) Check with your particular school to make sure they are open.
As the sun comes up, carefully check the outside for your house for any damage or issues. Check on your neighbours, especially those who may need extra assistance. – Dan & Lisa
