I spent the last two days in Kenya for major events promoting the protection and conservation of elephants and other iconic wildlife and their habitats. The poaching of elephants and rhinos and the trafficking of illicit wildlife product is at crisis levels. Who would have thought that these great mammals could be driven towards extinction because of human greed and a continuing consumer demand for ivory and rhino horn products? The world's foremost experts on elephant conservation gathered near Mt Kenya to discuss the crisis and the way forward. The Presidents of Kenya, Gabon, and Uganda were present. UNDP is committed to the cause, working with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and CITES - the Convention on Trade in Endangered Species. Key components of the fight back including eradicating poverty, fighting corruption and establishing the rule of law, and raising awareness of the damage of the trade in recipient countries. The photos show (1) me with iconic Kenyan conservationist, Richard Leakey, and (2) great stockpiles of ivory about to be destroyed in Nairobi as part of the campaign to get ivory out of the market. I have tweeted a lot on the two days - @helenclarkundp. United Nations Development Programme - UNDP Thanks to Undp Kenya for their support for my visit. Here's my speech at the Giants Club Summit I attended: http://www.undp.org/content/undp/en/home/presscenter/speeches/2016/04/29/helen-clark-keynote-speech-at-the-giant-s-summit-.html 🐘🐘🐘

The Panama Papers fiasco is becoming an embarrassment for New Zealand. We called yesterday for a Commission of Inquiry. Flat denials have come thick and fast from the PM. We’re not a tax haven for the crims and wealthy of the world he says. NZ gets an unhealthy number of mentions in these leaked documents
An inquiry is the thing to do, in NZ. And it should not be led by someone from the old boys’ network. Not IRD’s John Nash who made a mess of the Winebox inquiry more than 20 years ago . Not some former minister. An inquiry headed by someone independent and trustworthy, with taxation expertise and international knowledge. Nothing less.

People often ask me what I have for breakfast…well, pretty much every day without fail I have this GREEN SMOOTHIE (along with eggs on toast or porridge). It’s great for getting a hit of antioxidants before you leave the house, and tastes amazing – not at all bitter like some people might imagine! Get the recipe here: https://nadialim.com/recipe/everyday-green-smoothie/
Yesterday's article on the death of king-hit victim George Siaosi last week was a sad read. He was left unable to walk, talk or eat after he was assaulted in 2015. What's worse is the young man who attacked him was only convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with reckless intent. He served 12 months Home Detention, completed 300 hours of Community Service and paid a fine of $1000. That's too light. We want to see harsher penalties for this type of assault, a minimum sentence of 8 years if the victim dies. It's time a message was sent that our society will no longer tolerate king-hits.

I love watching the olympics. The emotion in sport is just so beautiful. The greatest moment of these olympics would have to be young Eliza coming from nowhere today to win bronze. And she smiled the entire time. Happiest athlete on earth I would say. What a lady, what a champion. You make us proud to be kiwis lovely lady 💗💗 seeing someone so happy doing what they do is awesome. 👌👌 Eliza McCartney
