DEVELOPING NEWS - State of emergency has been declared: Good evening. The Port Hills fires are still spreading and are out of control. A state of emergency has now been issued ( see below for more details )
** Please don't go into the area to 'LOOK' , emergency services and home owners need to be able to get in & out **
Our Christchurch forecast is updated - http://cwu.co.nz/forecast/christchurch/
LOCAL STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED IN CHRISTCHURCH AND SELWYN
The Mayors of Christchurch City and Selwyn District have made a joint decision to declare States of Emergency in their respective areas in relation to the Port Hills fires.
The declaration follows the evacuation this afternoon of 200-300 residents as the fire shifted closer to residential properties. It is no longer just a significant rural fire on the boundary of the city. It is now a city issue with suburbs being evacuated. Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says a city response is also required to ensure the safety and welfare of residents.
“Christchurch needs a multi-agency response given the seriousness of the situation. We need to be able to draw on all the resources possible to give our residents confidence in the ongoing response.”
Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton says, “we acknowledge there has been a huge effort responding to the fire to date, however this declaration recognises the seriousness of the situation, and this will allow us to provide all the assistance necessary to respond to the unfolding situation.
“The district and the city must work together to manage the situation and address the different challenges the fire is creating in each area.”
I am sure a lot of you have seen the headlines. No excuses - I made a massive error of judgment and have let down my club, my fans and most importantly my family. I will have to now let the police/court process run its course and face the consequences. I am just glad no one was harmed. Sorry.

Foreign owners have kicked New Zealanders in the teeth again with the closure of the Cadbury factory in Dunedin costing 350 workers their jobs.
This factory traces its origins back to 1868 and is an iconic part of Dunedin and Otago history. That has ended with the owners, American multinational, Mondelez International, deciding it can manufacture chocolate more cheaply in Australia.
Some big corporates have no concern for people, history or what country they operate in – all they want is profit and Cadbury’s closure is just another example of this.
Many NZers will now feel more inclined to buy Whittaker’s chocolate and other Kiwi produced chocolate knowing they are eating a product that is keeping NZers in jobs. - Whittaker's Chocolate Lovers

Headlines about a Chinese man accusing NZ of being heartless and absurd because his sick mum has been turned down for a visa to come and live here are absurd. Why should New Zealanders be left to foot the bill for her medical care. If the shoe were on the other foot, the Chinese authorities would tell a Kiwi to go back to his mother’s country and care for her and not expect China to do it. We’re saying the same thing to Cheng Wang who has been here for just five years. He has a has a job and can buy an air ticket. We’re saying do the right thing – go home and care for your mother, instead of asking New Zealand to do it for you. Read more on the blog here: http://www.winstonpeters.co.nz/
