The Autumn Equinox occurs at 11:58 pm tonight NZ time. There are two equinoxes each year, and these represent the day and time when the overhead sun shifts from being over the southern hemisphere, to being over the northern hemisphere (or vice versa). On the Autumn Equinox, the length of our day shortens by a greater amount than any other day of the year, though daylight hours are still reducing very quickly on days around the equinox.
While the name 'Equinox' comes from the Latin words for 'Equal-night', it is a bit of a misnomer. Due to refraction of sunlight in the atmosphere, and also because of the sun's size, our days are still slightly longer than our nights. However, by the end of this weekend, we'll be singing "hello from the other side" with Adele as our nights become longer than our days.

We’re determined to get young people “work ready”. There’s 91,000 out of work. Many are school drop outs. They have no direction. They need jobs, but have no skills. Our new bill to be debated in Parliament aims to turn them around. We want these young people to be trained in the army – in literacy and numeracy and in the trades. They’ll be employed as they learn. At 18 they will leave with skills. If other parties believe in giving younger generations a chance they will back our Bill.

Last night I was lucky enough to be elected as the MP for Mt Albert and this was the only photo I took- my mum with Stacey Jones. Seems fitting. Thanks to everyone who came last night, but thanks most of all to everyone who voted in our unusual by-election. I'm feeling pretty lucky right now. #mtalberthood
A male early childhood teacher from Dunedin who has been changing children's nappies for 30 years is speaking out about the "sexism in action" he says he has been subject to his entire career. The stigma ultimately hurts the children, he argues: https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/sexism-in-action-kindy-boss-speaks-over-parents-iffy-male-teachers-changing-childs-nappy
